How to Make Drinking Water a Habit

Getting the water your body needs is extremely important and comes with so many benefits that it should become a habit to drink it, and often. Studies show that those who drink more water throughout the day consume less calories, saturated fat and sugar (source). For those that aren’t used to it, it can seem dull and flavorless but, trust me, once you start, you’ll realize nothing quenches your thirst like a cold glass of water.

Make it a routine

Try drinking a glass right when you wake up for an instant energy boost and one right before going to bed. If you start off with this small step, you’ll be getting two extra cups of water and won’t forget to do it. Additionally, if you’re having a hard time drinking water all the time, try having a glass before you eat each meal and then choose your preferred drink. This way, you’ll drink less sugary drinks but won’t miss them.

Keep it handy

Throughout the day, keep a bottle by your side so you remember to take a sip when you need it. It’s important to interpret the signs of thirst, including a dry mouth, sluggishness, dry eyes or headache in order not to confuse it with hunger, which is quite common (source). That’s why drinking water before reaching for a snack is a good option, and taking sips of water even when you don’t think you’re thirsty is too. And as unpleasant as it may sound, your urine will let you know if you’re dehydrated as well: the darker it is, the more in need of water your body is.

Think of the money

For those who need to watch their spending, the money factor can really be motivating, as you can save a lot of money by choosing water over other beverages. It is of course cheaper to buy a bottle of water than of a carbonated drink in any supermarket, but you could even save more money. If the tap water in your town is drinkable, you could be saving big time. Bottled water is sold at 300 times the cost of tap water (source)!

Get some help

For some people, remembering to drink water throughout the day might be a hassle or getting used to its lack of taste can be excruciating, and it’s understandable. And that’s where clever inventions will help you out. You can purchase these water bottles with time marks so you don’t forget to drink up at regular intervals* or these fruit-infuser bottles to give your water a different taste each day. Plus, they’re really cute which makes them even cooler.

Keep the benefits in mind

Drinking water is an easy way to improve your overall health. It’s like nature’s own miracle. It can give you glowing skin, help you lose weight, make you feel energized, cool you down, get rid of headaches and so many more things. When it comes down to it, the way it’ll make you feel is the most important reason why you should increase your water intake asap.

*Just don’t force your body to have more water if you don’t actually want it. While usually only in extreme situations, there is a thing as drinking too much water (source).
