DIY Christmas Gifts

´Tis the season for gift-giving, but sometimes finding the right gift for someone can be tricky. If you’re the type of person that loves getting crafty, then check out these hand-made gifts your friends and family are sure to love!

Starbucks recipe book

For the Starbucks-obsessed friend, make the ultimate recipe book full of their favorite orders. You can find copycat recipes with a simple Google search and even healthier versions of them. You can buy a notebook with the franchise’s logo on Etsy or make it yourself with a cardboard cup sleeve, which will give you a great excuse to indulge in some coffee or tea. Cut enough paper for the inside and make holes on the side to bind it all together. You can spiral bind it or simply use a cute ribbon. If you feel like it isn’t enough on its own, buy something else following the same theme, such as a Starbucks gift card or mug.

Using a ceramic marker, paint anything from a simply flower design to a cartoon version of your friend to an inside joke onto a plain white mug. Depending on the marker you buy, it will need at least 24 hours to dry or some time in the oven for an enamel finish. They are usually dishwasher safe and quite resistant, so opt for these markers instead of Sharpies, which aren’t designed for this purpose specifically!

Instagram magnets

Choose your friend’s best Instagram snaps and turn them into a fridge decoration. You can order them from a service such as Sticky9. However, there is also a cheap and easy way to do it yourself with decoupage glue (commonly referred to by the brand name Mod Podge, but any brand will do), bare magnets and high quality prints. This website provides great step-by-step instructions. Keep in mind that they need plenty of time to dry, so don’t leave it for the last minute!

Customized candle

Who doesn’t love a nice candle? And who won’t cherish one made by a loved one? There are so many amazing ideas for candle-making, that I can’t list them all! Here are my favorites, but feel free to look up more or come up with your own! The container in which you make them can range from a mason jar to a cute tin to a delicate teacup. Make it from scratch or simply reuse old ones. Make it smell like vanilla, lavender or even tea. Add color while making it or dip dye it later.

Hot cocoa kit

For the chocolate lover, make a hot cocoa kit complete with all the necessary ingredients for them to enjoy this warm drink. Include hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, cinnamon sticks, ground candy canes, Irish cream liquor, chocolate chips and anything else you can think of that they like. Place it all in a mason jar, mug or other container and add a nice spoon for a complete gift.

Bath bombs

Lush has made the bath bomb, a fizzy product which can contain anything from glitter to rose petals to add into a warm bath and indulge in, very popular. Although they aren’t very expensive, they also aren’t very cheap. Here’s a great way to make them yourself (and here’s Nifty‘s), adding in your preferred colors and scents. If you can’t find citric acid in your area, here’s an alternative with tartar sauce. Don’t forget to add fun things like dried flowers or sprinkles!

Cupcake kit

Similar to the hot cocoa kit, this one is meant as a collection of useful thing for the baker in your life. You can go simple with small things like cupcake liners, sprinkles, cupcake mix and frosting or add a cupcake tin to make it a larger present. Other things to add: food coloring, frosting tools, candies, a whisk or fondant.
